WELCOME TO THE 6TH INTERNATIONAL COMPUTER REFURBISHERS SUMMIT
MIAMI, FLORIDA
ICRS 2009 SUMMIT AGENDA & SPEAKERS

October 14th and 15th, 2009

FEATURED SPEAKERS AND SESSION:


We’ll be staging a vigorous debate between the two competing accreditation standards: R2 and E-Stewards. Each program will be represented by their founders and their strongest supporters. Jim Puckett or Sarah Westervelt from Basel Action Network will be teaming up with Bob Houghton of Redemtech on behalf of the new E-Stewards accreditation program (link to: http://www.e-stewards.org/). Eric Harris of ISRI and Jake Player of TechTurn will represent the new R2 accreditation program (link to: http://www.epa.gov/waste/conserve/materials/ecycling/r2practices.htm).

The debate will be a simple question rebuttal format concentrating on 4 areas: environment, cost to become accredited, difficulty to function under, ultimate benefit to refurbishers'.

Frances Fawcett from Microsoft will provide an update on the status of Microsoft’s current refurbisher programs and discuss recent changes that have taken place.  In addition, she will also present a roadmap for the future of all the programs and, as in previous years, there will be ample time for questions from the audience. updates on the current Microsoft Secondary PC Programs and also new programs emerging in this field.

Harold Mitts from Microsoft will do a technical preview of the Refurbisher Preinstallation Kit (RPK), which is a software tool to help simplify refurbishment and Windows XP installation on diverse types of computers.  The RPK provides a turn-key solution to automatically apply a Windows XP image onto virtually any hardware, complete with driver and application support. This method of deployment greatly simplifies refurbishment process and can include various customizations.

Jerry Powell, Publisher of Resource Recycling Magazine and E-Scrap News, The collection, processing and end use of obsolete electronics .is undergoing rapid and vast change.  Numerous new players have entered the field, more and more states and provinces have implemented electronics recycling programs and pressure is being exerted for e-scrap processors to do a better job.  So what's happening?

Andrew Craig, Managing Director of Mico South Africa will present on sustainable refurbishment in Africa

James Osteen, Assistant Director of the City of Miami, Elevate Miami program and Achievement & Rehabilitation Centers of Broward County will welcome us to the conference.

Lou August of Wilderness Technology Alliance, Washington DC will be presenting on his work with President Obama’s Administration and the District of Columbia to create a national pilot “Technology Green-Jobs Training Center”.

We will lead a panel discussion on export markets for used equipment, which will include presenters:

  • Matthew Schwartzberg of Mercy Corp who will present on supplying equipment in to war torn areas of the world like Kosovo, Ethiopia, and Liberia.
  • John Dickenson from AER Worldwide will present on new developments in electronics reuse in the United Nations StEP Program

Nancy Jo Craig, Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council, Louisiana, USA will present on the continuing role of refurbished IT equipment in the field of disaster relief. Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Gustave: First you need a blue tarp then a refurbished computer. Examining the role of IT non-profits in disaster relief.

Willie Cade and his team from PC Rebuilders and Recyclers, Chicago, IL will provide an update on PACE international policy discussions underway in the Basel Convention – as they relate to computer reuse.

Willie’s technical team will.demonstrate the next generation hard drive sanitation technology, and how to create an operating system restore  volume on your hard drives.

Pat Furr, Computers for Classrooms (CFC), CA, USA will be doing an in-depth session on automating the refurbishment process using tools like Clonezilla and Sysprep.

Anne Peters of Gracestone, Inc., will present on the Green Electronics Council “Closing the Loop” project and research into designing electronics to enhance value capture in reuse & recycling. Anne will also speak on new EPEAT developments around design for the environment.

Jill Vaské,  Executive Vice President and Founder of Redemtech,  will lead a panel on what services corporations and other equipment suppliers are willing to pay for in the current business climate.

Anna Jaeger,  Co-Director of the GreenTech Initiative, TechSoup Global. PC Energy conservation & refurbishment.

Charles Brennick, founder and director of InterConnection. Panelist: The Social Side of International Distrubution of Used Equipment.


We also plan to have an ‘UNCONFERENCE’ networking session so everyone can better meet each other - More on that to follow...
